STORYTELLING RESOURCES

OPEN MICS & SLAMS

For most storytelling open mics and story slams, you will need to keep your stories under 5-6 minutes! Some popular curated shows also have a few available spots for open mic’ers so be sure to check the listings under “shows to pitch” as well

The ARTICHOKE Story Slam - Of course we’re putting this one first. Join us the 4th Thursday of each month at Norma’s in Wappingers Falls. Please check the link for rules and details.

The Moth - Obviously, this is the big one that started it all. There are Moth slams all over the world now.

On the Fly Story Slam - A popular story slam up in Catskill, NY

Full Circle Stories - An open mic in Gardiner, NY held the first Sundar of each month that is hosted by a rotating cast of Hudson Valley storytellers

Happy Hour Story Hour - (No link) NYC’s longest-running storytelling open mic (don’t quote me on that) which takes place every Monday night (7 PM) at The Duplex in the West Village

Just One More Thing - A free storytelling open mic at the Pine Box Rock Shop in Bushwick, Brooklyn

The Astoria Bookshop Storytelling Show - Open mic hosted by our friend David Lawson held on the first Thursday of each month. Check the calendar in the link for details.

One Up! Storytelling - Open mic in the West Village with a $300 cash prize! Funniest story of the night wins

CURATED SHOWS TO PITCH

Before pitching any of these shows, we highly recommend having some quality video of you performing. As exorbitant as those Moth videos are, if you feel you did particularly well one evening it is worth springing for the recording. Producers are far more likely to pay attention to a professionally-shot video than one shot by your friend on a smart phone.

NEW YORK CITY:

Story Collider - An amazing show and podcast that combines science & storytelling. If you have a true story that is in any way related to science, definitely pitch them.

Risk! - “True tales you never thought you’d dare to share”. This live show (and popular podcast) showcases edgier stories in which you, well… took a risk.

Awkward Teenage Years - A live storytelling show about our middle school & high school years.

We Love a Theme - Hosted by our fried Bailey Swilley at Pete’s Candy Store in Williamsburg

New Tricks - A storytelling show at QED in Astoria hosted and curated by Adrianne Frost

THE HUDSON VALLEY AND BEYOND:

Stories from the Stage - A TV show on PBS World Channel, which is filmed in Boston and is broadcast everwhere. Highly recommend pitching to this show. It’s a great experience and you will get some top-notch video for your storytelling reel.

Keepin’ It Real with Bridget O’Neill - Our pal Bridget hosts this storytelling show (with a few open mic spots) the 4th Thursday of each month at Savage Wonder in Beacon

Tell Me Another - A theme-free show in Hartford, CT in which storyteller Terry Wolfisch Cole coaches each performer in advance of the show
